Composting at home

Composting at home

Environmentalist, green-parent guru, and founder of @onplanetpatrol, Lizzie Carr, talked about our Mama Bamboo products on Steph’s Packed Lunch.

Lots of you have subsequently been asking about how to compost our products.

You can compost our products yourself, but there are a few things you’ll need to know.

First, you must use a hot composter to compost wet and dirty nappies and wipes. A normal garden compost will not get hot enough to kill pathogens. That means you won’t be able to use the compost in your flower beds after it breaks down… and you definitely wouldn’t want to use it in your veggie plot.

Secondly, the side tabs and frontal tape will not decompose. If possible rip these off before popping the used nappy into the hot bin.

You can put our nappy bags and wipes directly into the hot bin. These are 100% compostable.

To make sure the products break down effectively, be sure to add a mix of browns (e.g., dried leaves, bulking bark) and greens (e.g., fresh-cut grass and fruit & vegetable kitchen waste) to your composter. Be sure to turn the compost every 2-3 weeks to oxygenate the pile.

When the compost is ready, rake it through to remove any non-degraded elements. You can then use the finished compost for grass, shrubs, flowers and other non-edible plants.

We appreciate that hot composting at home is not for everyone and the volume of nappies in the early days can be overwhelming. We are working behind the scenes to change the way nappy and wipe waste is handled and processed across the UK.  We are making good progress towards establishing a doorstep collection and industrial composting service for you.
