How to Banish Cradle Cap: Simple Tips for Soothing Baby's Scalp

Cradle cap, or infantile seborrheic dermatitis, to give it its proper name, is a common and harmless condition that appears as greasy, yellowish scales or patches on a baby’s scalp. It’s not caused by poor hygiene, allergies, or an infection—rather, it’s linked to overactive oil glands possibly influenced by maternal hormones. It’s very common and nothing to be concerned about, but you may want to do all you can to help clear it up for your little one.

Whether you're a new parent or an experienced caregiver looking for a more natural, eco-conscious solution, here’s our quick tips for how to gently and effectively manage cradle cap while keeping your baby’s routine natural and safe.

We recommend using the 3 power ingredients found in all our babycare bath time products:

·       Bamboo – beyond being the best material for your bamboo nappies and baby wipes, bamboo extract is Mother Nature’s own little miracle when it comes to skin and scalp health. Naturally rich in silica and antibacterial it protects and softens skin.

·       Coconut – Coconut oil is famed for its hydration and moisturising properties.

·       Aloe Vera – renowned for its anti-inflammatory and soothing effects.

1. Soften the Scales

Start by applying a gentle natural oil—like coconut oil —to your baby’s scalp. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes to loosen the scales.

2. Wash with natural gentle shampoo

Wash your baby’s hair with a mild, baby shampoo, like Mama Bamboo’s Organic Aloe and Bamboo Shampoo.

3. Brush It Out

After rinsing the shampoo out, use a soft baby brush with the finest, softest bristles, or a fine-tooth comb to gently lift and remove flakes. Avoid scrubbing or picking, as this can irritate the skin.

4. Cool Rinse

Finish with a cool rinse or pat the scalp with a wet cool cloth. Not too cold though or your baby will likely protest.

5. Keep the Scalp Moisturised

After washing and drying, apply a light, hydrating moisturiser, like Mama Bamboo’s Organic Baby Lotion, to prevent the skin from becoming too dry, which can trigger more scaling.

Above all avoid harsh chemicals unless medically prescribed.

Steer clear of adult shampoos, synthetic scented lotions, or anything with alcohol or harsh chemicals that can irritate your baby’s delicate skin. Stick to the same eco-friendly approach you take with your bamboo baby wipes and eco nappies—gentle, natural, and effective.

When to See a Doctor:

If the cradle cap spreads beyond the scalp, becomes red and inflamed, or if there’s oozing or signs of infection, consult your doctor. Persistent or severe cases may need a prescription cream or antifungal treatment.

Cradle cap typically clears up within a few weeks to months. With a little patience and gentle care, your baby’s scalp will be soft and flake-free in no time.
