Earth Day 22nd April 2024

Mama Bamboo survey demonstrates lack of awareness around plastic nappy waste.  Survey shows how few people know the scale of the UK’s nappy waste problem

The extent of misunderstanding about the plastic nappy waste crisis in the UK was laid bare in a recent survey conducted by leading sustainable and eco-friendly B-Corp nappy brand Mama Bamboo ahead of Earth Day on 22nd April.

The survey showed less than one third of people know the true amount of nappy waste that goes into UK landfill every day and very few understand that nappies are manufactured using single-use plastic, demonstrating the fundamental lack of understanding around the plastic and landfill crisis.

In the UK alone 8 million nappies and 30 million wet wipes are thrown away every day. These plastic products will remain on our planet for hundreds of years, leaching chemicals and micro plastics into the soil and waterways for generations to come. Earth Day’s theme this year is Planet vs Plastics, a statement that is close to the heart of all the work Mama Bamboo does to try and reduce the impact of nappy waste, by offering planet-friendly, plant-based, high-performing alternatives.

Laura Crawford, Founder and CEO of Mama Bamboo says;

“It is quite terrifying how little understanding there is around the plastic crisis in this country, particularly in relation to nappies and wipes. We are at a tipping point where we will permanently damage our delicate eco systems with the amount of plastic waste we are putting into landfill every day, if we continue to use plastic filled nappies and wipes. We totally understand that not every parent wants to go down the reuseable, washing route, which is why we created plant-based disposable versions. We need to make it clear to parents that there is a viable, convenient alternative, which is better for the planet and better for our babies’ skin. To coin our strapline ‘Best for baby, you and mama earth too’.”

Mama Bamboo’s disposable eco-friendly nappies are made using sustainable bamboo viscose, plant-based compostable liners with a chlorine free super absorbent core and the baby wipes are made using compostable bamboo viscose. Using sustainable bamboo in this way has resulted in Mama Bamboo offsetting 101,060 tonnes of carbon, avoided 212,500 of crude oil, saved 199,000 gallons of water, and reduced oil-based plastic packaging by 96,000 pieces. In addition, Mama Bamboo work tirelessly to research and establish nationwide collection and composting services for their plant-based nappies and wipes.  These are small but significant steps in our mission to eradicate plastic nappy waste from our planet and we call on everyone to support Earth Day and do what they can to prevent the deepening of the plastic crisis.
