Do not flush "flushable" wipes

Do not flush "flushable" wipes

The wheels of Parliament may turn slowly, but eventually they do reach their destination. Nearly three years after campaigners first pushed for a ban on plastic wet wipes, the UK has finally taken a major step forward. On 18th November 2025, legislation officially came into force prohibiting the sale of wet wipes containing plastic. For environmental groups, water companies, and sustainability-focused brands like ours, this marks a long-awaited and meaningful victory.

The government announcement, New law bans plastic wet wipes to protect rivers and seas - GOV.UK, highlighted exactly why this change is so important. Plastic-based wipes don’t just cause occasional plumbing headaches—they create long-term environmental harm. Once flushed, they tangle together in sewers, help form fatbergs, clog pumping stations, and often escape into rivers and seas. There, they break down into microplastics, harming fish, birds, and wider ecosystems.

During the announcement, the Environment Minister took the opportunity to remind the public of a point experts have been repeating for years: wipes—any wipes—should never be flushed, even if the packaging claims they are “flushable.” That label has caused enormous confusion, and many households understandably assume that if something is marketed as safe to flush, it must be fine. In reality, most so-called flushable wipes still take far too long to break down, contributing to blockages and environmental pollution.

At Mama Bamboo, this message aligns perfectly with what we’ve always believed and always taught: the 3 P’s mantra.

*Paper, pee and poo — all go in the loo. Anything else goes in the bin — otherwise it’s a terrible sin.**

Toilets and sewage systems are designed for exactly three things. Add anything else, and you risk disrupting entire wastewater networks and inadvertently harming wildlife.

That’s precisely why you will never find so-called “flushable” wipes in the Mama Bamboo range. We’ve never believed in confusing customers with misleading claims or encouraging disposal habits that damage the environment. Instead, we design our wipes to be plastic-free, biodegradable, and safe to use. .

The new legislation is a huge moment for building consumer awareness. It reinforces the message that how we dispose of products matters just as much as what the products are made of. While banning plastic wipes is a critical step, building good disposal habits will ensure that this policy truly delivers on its promise.

As we celebrate this progress, we also see it as a reminder that positive change often takes time, collaboration, and persistent campaigning. But when it arrives, it can make a lasting difference for our rivers, seas, wildlife—and future generations.

At Mama Bamboo, we’re proud to have been ahead of the curve, and we’ll continue pushing for a world where eco-friendly really means eco-friendly.
