Top Tips for Keeping Your Baby Cool in Hot Weather

Summer sunshine can be wonderful, but when the temperatures soar, keeping your baby cool and comfortable becomes a top priority. Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so they’re more vulnerable to heat. The good news? With a few simple steps, you can help your little one stay safe, happy, and cool all summer long.

At Mama Bamboo, we care about your baby’s wellbeing and the planet. That’s why we’re sharing our favourite tried-and-tested summer tips to help you enjoy the warmer months with peace of mind.

1. Dress Baby in Lightweight, Breathable Clothing

Loose, light-colored cotton or bamboo clothing is perfect for warm days. These materials are breathable and help wick away moisture. For bedtime, consider a short-sleeved bodysuit or just a nappy, especially during heatwaves.

💚 Mama Bamboo’s sustainable bamboo nappies are naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, helping to keep your baby cool and dry even on the warmest nights.

2. Create a Cool Sleeping Environment

To keep your baby’s room cool:

  • Keep blinds or curtains closed during the day to block out the heat.
  • Use a fan, but never point it directly at your baby.
  • Consider placing a frozen bottle of water in front of the fan for a cool breeze effect.
  • Use lightweight bedding or just a cotton sheet. Or one of our organic cotton and sustainable bamboo muslin's would also be perfect in the warm weather

Check the room temperature regularly — ideally, it should be between 16–20°C (61–68°F).

3. Offer Plenty of Fluids

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula-feeding, or your baby is on solids, staying hydrated is key. Breastfed babies might feed more often in the heat, and older babies will benefit from regular sips of cooled, boiled water.

4. Keep Cool on the Go

If you're heading outside, time your walks for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak sun. Use a sunshade on the pram (but not a blanket, which can trap heat), and dress your baby appropriately.

🍼 Don’t forget to pack some bamboo baby wipes — Mama Bamboo’s gentle, biodegradable wipes are perfect for a quick cool-down and freshen-up on the move.

5. Use Cooling Baths or Damp Cloths

A lukewarm bath before bed can help cool your baby’s body temperature. You can also use a damp flannel or muslin cloth to gently wipe their hands, feet, and forehead throughout the day.

6. Choose Breathable, Eco-Friendly Nappies

Conventional nappies can trap heat and moisture, causing discomfort. Our award-winning Mama Bamboo nappies are made from sustainable bamboo, known for its breathability and natural temperature regulation.

🌿 They’re not only kind to delicate skin but also kind to the environment — a perfect match for conscious parenting in every season.

7. Watch for Signs of Overheating

Be aware of signs like flushed cheeks, fast breathing, or restlessness. Trust your instincts — if your baby seems uncomfortable, cool them down gently and consult your healthcare provider if you’re worried.

Final Thoughts

Summer with your baby can be filled with joyful memories — paddling pools, gentle walks, and giggles in the shade. With a few thoughtful steps and the right essentials, you can keep your little one cool, comfy, and safe.

For naturally cool bottoms and planet-friendly peace of mind, discover Mama Bamboo’s eco-friendly bamboo nappies and biodegradable baby wipes. Because caring for your baby and the world they’ll grow up in should go hand in hand.
