Mama Bamboo are Carbon Positive

Mama Bamboo are Carbon Positive

Mama Bamboo are proud to be certified "Carbon Positive" once again by the Bamboo Village.

"Carbon Positive" means we remove more carbon from the atmosphere than we put in.

We have collaborated with the Bamboo Village again to calculate, reduce and offset our carbon through their ONCRA approved afforestation programme.

This year, we have worked hard to reduce our carbon output even further. We reduced our freighting carbon output by 20% per shipment, through innovative use of freight space, and we reduced our factory carbon output, through a switch to solar power wherever possible.

We calculated our remaining carbon output and partnered with The Bamboo Village once again, to plant acres of beautiful bamboo forest.

The Bamboo Village is a project with love and respect for both people and the Earth. Born as the brainchild of Dutch entrepreneur Henri Potze and executed by a team of hardworking, caring experts who all have the same mission at their hearts.

The Bamboo Village has a 3 fold mission; to reverse the devasting effects of climate change, to help build houses for those most in need and to provide meaningful employment in poverty-stricken communities.

HOW DOES PLANTING BAMBOO HELP IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE?

  • Bamboo is a natural storage place for CO2: a space where the CO2 we emit every day is collected and stored.
  • Bamboo is a 3 x more effective carbon storage than any other woody plant.
  • Bamboo grows incredibly fast. Bamboo can grow up to 91 centimetres per day.
  • On average, every square meter of bamboo in Bamboo Village Uganda can absorb 267.2 kilos.

HOW DOES PLANTING BAMBOO HELP BUILD HOMES?

  • The team have built 2 eco-houses using bamboo grown on site and other building materials. These houses are home to otherwise homeless children in Entebbe. Each building houses no less than 12 children.

HOW DOES BUV PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT?

  • The bamboo plantation is a direct source of employment, for agricultural specialists, field workers and plantation managers.
  • In addition, extra jobs are created for the creative entrepreneurs who use the bamboo to make products.
